We are DRAP
About the Disability, Rights And Politics Group (DRAP)
We are the DRAP, a group of people with learning disabilities, autism, and other disabilities, coming together to make our voices heard. We talk about important issues that affect our lives and work to make a difference in our community.
Who We Talk To
We regularly speak with organizations and decision-makers, including:
- Brent Police
- Brent Council
- Transport for London
- Local MPs and Councillors
We raise issues that matter to us, from access to services to disability rights. Sometimes, we see real change because of our work. Other times, the change doesn’t come right away. But we never stop speaking up—our voices stay strong and united.
What We’ve Achieved
One of our biggest successes has been training staff on key issues like:
- Learning Disability Awareness
- Disability Hate Crime
- Accessible Information, such as Easy Read materials
We make sure people in power understand how to communicate better with individuals with learning disabilities. Under the Accessible Information Standard Act, it’s against the law to provide health information that’s hard to understand. Information must be clear and accessible, and we’re here to remind everyone of that.
What is the Accessible Information Standard?
The Standard is an ‘information standard’ for the NHS and adult social care system and is officially called SCCI1605 Accessible Information. Since 1 August 2016, all organisations that provide NHS care and/or publicly-funded adult social care must follow the Standard in full. The legal duty (which organisations are obliged to follow) is set out in section 250 of the Health and Social Care Act 2012.
The Standard is relevant to patients, service users, carers and parents with information and/or communication needs related to or caused by a disability, impairment or sensory loss. It aims to make sure that they get accessible information and communication support. The Accessible Information Standard applies to all providers of NHS and publicly-funded adult social care.
Our Group and Our Journey
Our group has been active for over 14 years, and we know there’s still more work to be done. We won’t stop until services fully include us and recognize our rights. We believe everyone deserves equal access to support, services, and opportunities.
We meet every Wednesday at Brent Mencap from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM.
Our mission is simple: Keep raising our voices, keep fighting for change, and never give up.
