Self-Advocacy and Campaigns
At Brent Mencap, we believe everyone should have the chance to speak up and be heard, especially people with disabilities. That’s why we work hard through our self-advocacy groups to make sure people with learning disabilities are treated fairly and can access the support they need.
What is Self-Advocacy?
Self-advocacy means speaking up for yourself or having someone else help you speak up. At Brent Mencap, we support people with learning disabilities to stand up for their rights and make sure their voices are heard.
Our team is here to make sure everyone is treated with respect and has the support they need to live a full and active life.
Influencing for Change
We also run important events to raise awareness about the challenges people with learning disabilities face. These events help push for positive changes in areas such as:
- Access to better healthcare
- Equal rights in the community
- Stopping disability hate crime
- Improving accessible information
We work with Brent Council, the GLA, TFL 9, the police, health services, and other organizations to ensure people with learning disabilities and other disabilities are included and treated fairly.
Our Impact
Brent Mencap’s advocacy and influencing have made a real difference. We’ve trained over 150 Brent staff on Learning Disability Awareness and Disability Hate Crime. By keeping our voices alive, we are helping to make sure people with disabilities can live their lives to the fullest, with equal rights and opportunities.
